NEWS FLASH:  Legislation was introduced into Federal Parliament today (25 June 2008) which will bring separating defacto couples under the Family Law Act.  It is understood the amendments will apply to defacto relationships that break down after the amendments commence in the states that have referred power to the Commonwealth.  The legislation may take until September or later this year to be passed.

The new legislation will allow defacto couples to have their property and spouse maintenance disputes heard in the Family Court rather than the State Supreme and District Courts.
